Road Transport: Questions and Answers
What is the difference between full truckload (FTL) and less than truckload (LTL)?
FTL (Full Truck Load): Renting the entire vehicle's cargo capacity for a single customer. This solution guarantees the fastest delivery times and eliminates the need for reloading along the way.
LTL (Less than Truck Load): Groupage transport in which the trailer space is shared among multiple shippers. This allows for cost optimization with smaller shipments.
LTL (Less than Truck Load): Groupage transport in which the trailer space is shared among multiple shippers. This allows for cost optimization with smaller shipments.
What is a load-bearing meter (LDM) and how do you calculate it?
Loading Meter is a unit defining 1 meter of the length of the loading space of a standard-width trailer (approx. 2.4 m).
For example:
For example:
- A standard Euro pallet (120 x 80 cm) takes up 0.4 LDM.
- An industrial pallet (120 x 100 cm) takes up 0.5 LDM.
What are the permissible dimensions and weight of cargo on a standard FTL trailer?
A standard curtainsider trailer can accommodate up to 33 Euro pallets, is approximately 13.6 m long, 2.45 m wide, and has a payload capacity of approximately 24 tons. Mega trailers also allow for the loading of goods up to 3 meters high. Loads exceeding these parameters are classified as oversized transport.
What are the carrier's responsibilities and why is it worth purchasing additional Cargo insurance?
Carrier liability is governed by the CMR Convention and is limited to 8.33 SDR for each kilogram of damaged or lost cargo (approximately PLN 40/kg). If the goods being transported are of high value, we recommend purchasing dedicated Cargo insurance, which protects the full invoice value of the goods against all risks.
